BEFORE: Soon Nile Room is going on a special bus trip to the Port. We are leaving at 9:30 am and coming back at 11:30 am. All kids are required to stay inside the bus at all times. We think that is because it is very dangerous. Cranes will be picking up the containers and moving them around.
Also if we stay on the bus we won't get lost.
Drew found the "expected arrivals" from the weather page of the newspaper. Otis read out a ship name -The Spirit of Endurance which weighs 7464 tonnes! It is loading and unloading containers. We might see it when we are there!
AFTER: We are back from the port. At the end of the trip we all got a squishy ball of the world.
We saw lots of cranes - Sophie
It was really sunny so we could see everything really well - Joran
We had a sheet of things to spot during the trip - Alex
We hope we get to do it again - Saphire
We got really nervous when the bus drove close to the edge of the wharf - Jaladhi
We saw thousands of containers - Brearna
The 40 foot container fridges can take 130 000 apples - Sahria
The pictures of the wharf in a timeline was fascinating - Otis
We are an action packed class of Year 4, 5 and 6 students at Auckland Point School in beautiful Nelson, New Zealand.

SchoolTV
Hey Nile Room! Check out this Auckland School's website.
They are a primary school like we are and make their own tv school news show that anyone in the world can watch.
They started making it in 2001. Below is a clip from one of their 2012 episodes.
To check out other episodes of their show check out this website Pt England's schooltv
Perhaps Nile Room's film crew will learn to make clips like this with Dave!

Problem facts!
We have trouble remembering one or two of our basic facts each time we do our basic facts ten by ten grid.
Today some people used equipment to model the fact they often have a brain block about.

Ricky has an odd one out... which one is it and why?

Friday aka Bike Day
Today we went on the road for Bike Safety. We split into groups of about five people with two instructors.
We went out of school, across the road, passed the Trafalgar Centre and across the bridge to the cycle track.
We learned to push off from the kerb. Before you push off from the kerb you have to do your hand signals.
I like the bit when we went around two parked cars.

Why Does Popcorn Pop?
Today in Nile Room we were investigating why popcorn pops. After we had thought about it we each came up with our own hypothesis.
Here are some of our ideas:
“...the pressure of the heat builds up until it bursts with a crunchy edible shell...”
“...the heat and pressure causes the kernel to expand and explode. When the inside expands, the kernel splits.”
“I think that when popcorn heats up the popcorn starts over expanding and inside it starts exploding and turns it into popcorn.”
“...warm air starts to get bigger and bigger in the inside of the kernel. The hotter it gets the bigger it gets then it splits and pop! There’s your popcorn.”
After we had shared some of our ideas we watched this video that explains what actually makes popcorn pop:
Most of our hypotheses were pretty close to being correct.
The key point we learnt from the video was that a kernel of popcorn contains 14% water. It is the water in the kernel the causes it to pop. When then kernel is heated up, the water turns to steam and eventually the pressure from the steam causes the kernel to pop.
After we learnt about what makes popcorn pop we got to see the process in action. We made a big batch of popcorn and then tasted it!

Cricket Coaching
Students from Nile and St.Vincent joined in the fun.

Maia was the roving reporter and took a good number of action pictures of people running around the field.
Noah from St.Vincent made a wonderful catch.
Whaitiri from our room was the catching superstar of the day.

We have had quite a sporty day today with swimming straight after play, movement skills with Helen straight after swimming, lunch time swim and cricket coaching straight after lunch!
It was wonderful to see so many people choosing to participate and contributing to our positive atmosphere!

My Trip to Melbourne Zoo
We have just arrived and entering the Melbourne zoo. I am here with mum and Grandpa.
Wow it's huge. Hope I have a great time.
Uh-Oh it started to rain!
Phew it was only a short shower of rain.
The first animals we saw were the meerkats. We took lots of photos and videos.
Then we moved down the track to the tree kangaroos and red pandas.
Then we went down a lot of different paths with Gorillas, Elephants, Frogs, Reptiles, Lions, Tigers, Penguins, Seals, Pelicans, Stingray, Fish, Bugs, Apes, Monkeys, Otters, Hippos, Kangaroos, Birds, Emus, Bears, Big Cats, Small Cats, Peccaries, Orang-Utangs, Koals, Bongos, Giraffes, Zebras and even Lemurs!!!
We went back to the start and got some popcorn and we headed back to my Granpa's house.
I had a fantastic time at the zoo.
(We were there for three and a half hours!

The Trip to Sissy Bay
Two weeks ago my family and I(including Jed, our dog)drove to Sissy Bay for the weekend. When we got there(after about two and a half hours!)we got out of the car and started unloading. It took about twenty minutes doing that and when we finally did that we just sat down and did nothing.Phew! The next day it was very sunny so Dad went out to spray the weeds and of course Jed wanted to help!
All Mum did was lay in the sun reading a book and drink wine.
We were having a pretty lazy day and all we did was watch a movie. On Sunday Dad went out kayaking for a while and he saw dolphins chasing him so he came back to get me so he could show me.
When we got there the dolphins where gone. Anyway we still did some fishing. Mum and Jed could see us so Jed started barking.
On the way back to shore we also went through this cut through a mountain and the wind kept bashing us into the side of it. It was not pleasant. We were being pulled hard. We were paddling furiously trying to stay upright. Finally we got back to land! I walked up the hill while Mum and Dad kept throwing the stick for Jed. Our weekend was over and we drove back to Nelson and home.

Rugby League
We have started our weekly Rugby League tournament at Tahuna playing fields. A bus comes and picks us up from school to take us to the field. We have 2 APS teams competing against teams from Nayland Primary, Tahuna, Birchwood, Stoke and Victory.
There is a drills area set up for us to use while we are not playing a game. We all had great fun getting muddy after all the rain we have had.

Otis I am poem
I’m funny and reliable
I’m wonder if the world will end
I hear constant gunfire
I see the explosions
I want a p.s.3 and a Zippo
I am funny and reliable
I pretend I am in the army
I feel fizzy inside
I touch the comets falling by
I worry about the enemy bombers hoping they wont hit me
I cry when something disappointed
I’m funny and reliable.
