Alevins Galore!!

First thing Monday everyone wanted to check on the alevins!
Some had come out of the basket and were wriggling about on the bottom of the tank - this is a 'nono' at this stage as it will make them use up their energy (and therefore their yolksac) to quickly!

We got in touch with Mark and he dropped by with a tiny net and rescued them from the bottom of the tank and popped them back into the basket.

He used tweezers from our first aid kit to pick out the dead eggs (five). Sahria and Sophie took them around to St Vincent Room and Trafalgar Room for them to have a look.

Below is a picture of all our alevins.

Alevins!

This morning when we checked the fish there was a GHOST egg.... then I saw a hatched fish!

Then, this afternoon, ANOTHER fish!!!

At first we thought they were lying on top of the other eggs and squishing them, then we realised they were lying on their yolk!

We are very excited!!

We have noticed that more of them look like they have two eyes.

Salmon Egg Update

Today we drew diagrams of what we thought was going on inside the salmon eggs.

Then we carefully took out a few eggs to have a closer look. We made sure to keep them cool and not bump them around to much so they don't get hurt.

Then we drew what we could actually see - we could see far less than we had imagined!
They do have very beady eyes looking back at us though...

Otis did a bit of writing about salmon...

"Salmon are vicious creatures and if threatened they will try to rip your heart out.
They live in underwater caves on dark dim ledges where they breed to make bigger and stronger salmon armies to wipe out all of the human race and take Earth as their own."

I think it is time we found out some salmon facts!!!

Salmon Rearing!

Today was extra exciting -  and not just because of the amazing storm!

Just after 1pm - right in the loudest part of the storm - Mark and Charmaine arrived with our salmon eggs!!!

The eggs are orangey pink and are in a small container. There are fifty of them.Mark left them in their container and tied it to the top filter tube with dental floss!

Mark covered the whole tank with a black plastic bag to protect the eggs from too much light. He also reset the temperature on the chiller to between 9 and 10 degrees.
Now we need to  peep at the eggs every now and then.
In about a week we can start to expect some tiny hatchlings!!
